Drag force on spherical particles trapped at a liquid interface

نویسندگان

چکیده

The drag past spherical particles attached to a deformable fluid-fluid interface in the limit of small Capillary number and deviation contact angle from 90 degrees is determined. Analytical results are given for single particle flow while an analytical investigation supplemented with straightforward numerical done pairs on interface. Asymptotic large Bond number.

Electrodipping force acting on solid particles at a fluid interface.

We report experimental results which show that the interfacial deformation around glass particles (radius, 200-300 microm) at an oil-water (or air-water) interface is dominated by an electric force, rather than by gravity. It turns out that this force, called for brevity "electrodipping," is independent of the electrolyte concentration in the water phase. The force is greater for oil-water than...

Curvature-induced capillary interaction of spherical particles at a liquid interface.

We consider a liquid interface with different principal curvatures +/-c and find that the mere presence of a spherical particle leads to a deformation field of quadrupolar symmetry; the corresponding "capillary quadrupole moment" is given by the ratio of the particle size and the curvature radius. The resulting pair interaction of nearby particles is anisotropic and favors the formation of aggr...

Force balance of particles trapped at fluid interfaces.

We study the effective forces acting between colloidal particles trapped at a fluid interface which itself is exposed to a pressure field. To this end, we apply what we call the "force approach," which relies solely on the condition of mechanical equilibrium and turns to be in a certain sense less restrictive than the more frequently used "energy approach," which is based on the minimization of...

Electrostatic interaction between colloidal particles trapped at an electrolyte interface.

The electrostatic interaction between colloidal particles trapped at the interface between two immiscible electrolyte solutions is studied in the limit of small inter-particle distances. Within an appropriate model analytic expressions for the electrostatic potential as well as for the surface and line interaction energies are obtained. They demonstrate that the widely used superposition approx...

Capillary force on a micrometric sphere trapped at a fluid interface exhibiting arbitrary curvature gradients.

We report theoretical predictions and measurements of the capillary force acting on a spherical colloid smaller than the capillary length that is placed on a curved fluid interface of arbitrary shape. By coupling direct imaging and interferometry, we are able to measure the in situ colloid contact angle and to correlate its position with respect to the interface curvature. Extremely tiny capill...
